From the Crisis of Restauración to the Crisis of Constitutionalism: the Primoriverist Septenate as a “Rationalization” of Authoritarianism
Is it possible to talk about authoritarian constitutionalism? The objective of this study is to reflect on the experience of Primo de Rivera as an institutional laboratory for the solution of the crisis of Restauración, which seeks to forge the idea of a politically unitary Nation through the redefinition in an authoritarian- conservative sentiment of the fundamental categories of the constitutional debate of the war. The autonomy, the pluralization of representation, the rationalization of parliamentarianism are converted into evil instruments in the construction of an authoritarian alternative to the inclusion of the masses within the institutional perimeter which, although inspired by Italian fascism, seeks to formalize its legitimacy in the pseudo-constitutional process of the National Consultative Assembly.
